Glutamate

Glutamic acid or Glutamate is the most abundant excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system of mammalians and a key molecule in metabolism. The antagonists of this exciatatory neurotransmitter are the inhibitory transmitters with Serotonin and GABA being the most dominant. GABA is directly linked to Glutamate via the so-called Glutamine cycle thus allowing for a fast and sub tle adjustment during the different physiological conditions. Glutamate is involved in cognitive functions like learning and memory in the brain and has also been implicated in epileptic seizures.
